The Door Dasher is a specialized subterranean mimic related to the common Lurker Above and Trapper. It has evolved a hard, rectangular chitinous shell that perfectly mimics the texture of wood, stone, or iron. It attaches itself to empty door frames in well-traveled dungeons, appearing to be a standard, closed door.

Combat

The Door Dasher relies entirely on surprise (surprising parties on a 1–4 on a 1d6). When a creature attempts to open the "door" by turning a non-existent knob or pushing on the surface, the monster hinges itself forward with incredible speed.

The Dash: It slams into the lead character, dealing 2–12 points of crushing damage.

The Pin: If the attack succeeds, the victim must make a Saving Throw vs. Paralyzation or be pinned beneath the creature's heavy, slab-like body. While pinned, the victim takes 1–6 points of suffocation damage per round.

Escape: Once it has struck, the Door Dasher’s "Move" increases to 15" as it uses multiple insectoid legs hidden beneath its rim to scurry away into the darkness, often carrying a pinned victim with it to be consumed in safety.

Habitat/Society

Door Dashers are solitary hunters. They are often found in ruins where "the door that shouldn't be there" might go unnoticed by careless adventurers. They are known to keep small, shiny objects (Treasure Type Q) lodged in their "door handles" to act as lures for greedy thieves.
