As I straddled a lover on the leather couch in my new apartment, he asked: 'How is it possible you didn’t have sex for so many years? You are always in the mood.'

'I was a different person,' I said. 'It’s amazing what you can get used to.'

Two years ago, I never could have imagined myself doing a boudoir photo shoot or joining a Zoom room full of women in lingerie, talking about pleasure and power. The idea of even owning lingerie, let alone dancing in it, felt foreign to me.

My marriage had ended over a similar question, asked by my husband without looking up from his laptop: 'Are we ever going to have sex again?'

I was at the kitchen sink, rinsing strawberries. It was a fair question, asked the way you might ask about a dental appointment, and for most of our marriage I would have laughed it off, changed the subject, kept us both comfortable.

That morning I heard myself say: 'I don't want to do this anymore.'

He was asking about sex. My answer was about the whole marriage.

From the outside, I had everything I was supposed to want. A good husband. Two beautiful kids. Fourteen years in Chicago building a family, then the house in California I had dreamed about since my twenties.

He coached Little League. We hosted the holidays, showed up. If you had scrolled past us online, you would have thought: they've figured it out.

It took me years to admit that none of it was making me happy.

There was no villain in our story. No single dramatic reason I could hand people when they asked.

What we had was quieter than that and, I think, far more common. Somewhere along the way we had stopped being lovers and become colleagues. Two competent people running the business of marriage. We managed schedules, mortgages, school pickups.

We were polite and efficient with each other. And at some point, without either of us ever deciding it, we stopped reaching for each other.

The lack of intimacy was never just about sex. It was the hand that no longer reached for mine in the car. Conversations that were all logistics. Whole evenings in the same room without once really looking at each other.

Nobody warns you that you can feel lonelier lying next to someone than you ever felt alone.

I lived with that loneliness for years and I called it happiness.

That is the part I most want other women to hear. A low-grade dissatisfaction can pass for happiness when you have kids and a mortgage and no clear path to unwind any of it in a way that feels possible.

So you tuck the longing away. You tell yourself you're grateful, that this is what grown-up love looks like, that wanting more is greedy. And the longing sits there quietly, year after year, becoming a time bomb of its own.

I hear it now in the conversations on girls' nights out and over coffee, catching up on the highlight reel. Almost the same words I once used.

'Maybe when the kids finish school.'

'It's not so bad.'

'We have so much, shouldn't I be happy?'

At some point I emailed our estate attorney and asked, hypothetically, what a divorce would even look like. I felt sick hitting 'send.' Half of me needed the answer. Half of me hoped she wouldn't write back.

People love to ask when I knew it was over. There was no lightning bolt, no discovery, no last straw. It was slower and stranger than that. One afternoon I looked across the living room of that California dream house at my husband and realized I was looking at someone I used to know.

When I finally said I was leaving, more than one friend responded: 'But he's a good guy.'

And he was. That was never the question. What settled it for me was imagining my daughter grown, sitting across from me, describing this marriage as her own. The politeness. The distance. The quiet giving-up dressed as gratitude.

I knew in an instant what I would tell her to do. I just couldn't come up with one good reason why she deserved more than I did.

The wanting was never the problem. I was raised, like most women I know, to be agreeable. Easygoing. Low-maintenance was a compliment. And agreeable girls grow into women who don't make waves, who adapt, who flow.

So we flow. Into careers, into cities, into marriages. Then one day we look up and realize we have quietly flowed our way into a life that isn't the one we actually want.

Nobody forced us. That's what makes it so hard to see. Agreeableness doesn't feel like a cage from the inside. It feels like being easy to love.

Which is why admitting I wanted more was harder than the leaving itself. Wanting is dangerous for women like us. The moment you name it, even in a whisper, even alone in the car, you can't unname it.

It sat in me for years as a question I refused to finish. The day I finally finished it, the marriage was already over. The rest just took time.

Almost two years later, the end arrived by email on an ordinary gray afternoon, one line from the judge: the parties are divorced as of today. I cried harder than I had in years, and it caught me off guard because I wasn't sad it was over. I was crying for everything it had been. The wedding. The babies. The woman who kept trying.

Then I napped, made dinner, picked up the kids, and walked the dogs. Life is not a movie.

I thought I was the only one. I wasn't even close. In America, the share of divorces involving people over 50 has quadrupled since 1990, from under 9 percent to 36 percent.

And it's women doing the leaving. Research consistently shows women initiate the majority of these midlife divorces, even knowing what it will cost them. Studies put a woman's drop in standard of living after a gray divorce at nearly half.

We know that going in, and we go anyway. That should tell you something about what staying was costing us.

I don't think marriage got worse. I think women stopped lying about it. We were raised to be grateful and low-maintenance, to keep the family running and to call the running itself love.

Many of us used every ounce of our competence to manage our own dissatisfaction. Then the kids got older, our mothers got sick, our bodies stopped letting us pretend, and the question we had been swallowing for 20 years finally came up for air.

Is this it?

My life today is not a fairy tale. I'm a single mother. There are school runs and refinancing paperwork and nights when the grief still finds me.

But the house feels lighter. I never realized how much of my energy went into tracking the weather of another person until I stopped.

A few months ago my daughter caught me dancing in the kitchen in my pajamas and asked, half laughing, what was wrong with me. Nothing was. That was the whole news.

People call what I did blowing up my life. From the outside, I suppose it looked like an explosion. From the inside, it was the slowest thing I have ever done, a decade of true sentences I kept postponing.

And it doesn't have to end the way mine did. For some women, the braver move is telling the truth inside the marriage. Naming what has gone quiet. Reaching for each other again before the distance hardens into something neither of you can cross.

So if you're reading this and something in your chest just went still, I'm not telling you to leave. But stop pretending you can't hear it. The longing you keep tucking away doesn't dissolve. It waits.

I had everything I was supposed to want. It took me 20 years to say out loud: I want more than this, and wanting is enough. Full stop.

Gray divorce sounds great until you realize you're just trading in a boring marriage for another old person who will have new annoying habits. And her daughter isn't going to understand when she realizes her dad did nothing wrong and now her mom is writing about straddling her lover. Guess who daughter is going to hang out with at Christmas?

Obviously this birdbrain is mentally ill beyond belief and doesn't seem to understand that she will continue to age and at some point will be unable to sell whatever "services" she is selling (presumably she is some sort of hooker with her website as a cover story.) But I believe that a huge amount of this sort of shit comes from marriages in which the woman views herself as an equal "partner" to her husband. "My Partner and I are looking at a house this weekend," "my Partner and I love that restaurant." Uhhh, your business partner? Don't you mean your Husband?

If she doesn't view her man as the leader, her brain can get filled with a variety of bullshit. Obviously this woman represents a very, very extreme outcome.

I think of times I'm in the gym and I hear women in their late 30s / early 40s badmouthing their husbands in really subtle, but telling ways. And you can just tell there is resentment...and that their husbands need to legitimately just spank them with brute force.
