would you ever work for the military/Department of Defense?

Long-time BIGFED employee here. Not going to share too much, but I currently work at one of the more benign agencies. However, an opportunity with the DoD is available that would basically max out how much I could realistically make in BIGFED. The problem is that I don't want to support the war system, which is why I've avoided the DoD and IC.
Don't have the details on what I'd do at the DoD specifically yet. The money is alluring because BIGFED doesn't pay all that well but comes with job security.
The pay increase is large enough that it would have a relatively substantial effect on how much I can save/invest and thereby retire early, which is one of my primary goals in life.
I can only see myself working for the DoD if it's some benign role where I'm not supporting anything related to war/weapons/foreign policy/etc. but rather helping out active duty people and/or veterans outside of any insane foreign policy goals of the US (the key reason I've avoided the DoD and IC).
WWXOD?

I worked for the DoD
Sometimes I'd go on base and they would act like I was special or important and I'd meet w generals who seemed important but I have no clue who they were
I spent my time at that job writing some kind of audit system. I was the sole programmer for like 9 months and it was one of my first jobs so I didn't know jack shit.

Everything dies
My job was pretty chill no one ever bothered me
They just cared that the work was done but there was legit zero pressure
I almost feel like my job was more of a spend it or lose it type thing. I remember hearing that and seeing that a lot.
